Unit Aim and LearningOutcomes:
The aim of this unit is to help students understand the difference between the function of a manager and the role of a leader. Students will consider the characteristics, behaviours and traits which support effective management and leadership. In addition, this unit will introduce the concept of operations as both a function and a process which all organisations must adopt to conduct business. Students will be introduced to contemporary and historical theories and concepts which will support their learning for this unit. On successful completion of this unit students will have developed sufficient knowledge and understanding of how management and operations make a positive, efficient and effective contribution to an organisation at a junior level. This could be in the role of a team leader or managing a specific aspect of an operation function and/or process. Underpinning all aspects of the content for this unit you will consider topics under two broad headings: management and operations.Learning Outcomes By the end of this unit a student will be able to: Differentiate between the role of a leader and the function of a manager. Apply the role of a leader and the function of a manager in given contexts. Demonstrate an appreciation of the role leaders and managers play in the operations function of an organisation. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between leadership and management in a contemporary business environment.
Scenario Uber Technologies, Inc., commonly known as Uber, offers vehicles for hire, food delivery (Uber Eats), package delivery, couriers, freight transportation, and, through a partnership with Lime, electric bicycle and motorized scooter rental. It is one of the largest providers in the gig economy and is also a pioneer in the development of self-driving cars. Uber is estimated to have over 110 million monthly active users worldwide. In the United States, Uber has a 67% market share for ride-sharing and a 24% market share for food delivery. This report requires you to research and present a Critical Analysis and Evaluation of the different theories and approaches to leadership in given contexts in Uber or your chosen organisation. As guidance, the report Must put together information that Defines and compares the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager. You must also evidence an Examination of examples of how the role of a leader and the function of a manager apply in different situational contexts like the launch of a new product; employee engagement; performance management; change management etc. in your chosen organisation and must also demonstrate an Application of the Situational, Systems and the Contingency Leadership theories and concepts. A further Analysis and Differentiation between the role of a leader and function of a manager by effectively applying a range of different theories could help in the distinction between the two concepts. As well as an Examination of the strengths and weaknesses to appraise different approaches to situations within the work environment could be undertaken and evidenced to enhance the quality of the report.Part 2 – Operations
The second part of the report will demonstrate an understanding of operations management in the contemporary business environment and the role that leaders and managers play in decision making. For this purpose, you are to evidence a Critical Evaluation of the application of operations management and factors that impact on the wider business environment in this part of the report.Guidance An Evaluation of how leaders and managers can improve efficiencies of operational management to successfully meet business objectives could also be undertaken and included in the report. However, to demonstrate an appreciation of the role leaders and managers play in the operations function of an organisation, your research findings must evidence an Explanation of the key approaches to operations management and the role that leaders and managers’ play and an Explanation of the importance and value of operations management in achieving business objectives. Also, as a must, an Assessment of the factors in the context of corporate social responsibility; culture, values, ethics and sustainability within the business environment that impact upon operational management and decision-making by leaders and managers must be evidenced in your report. An Analysis of how these different factors affect the business environment and wider community can also be undertaken and included in the report.
The module will be assessed and graded against the Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria as specified in the assessment grid below issued by the awarding body, Pearson Edexcel.
