Case scenario:
ABC Pty Ltd is an Australian pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in Melbourne.
Scientists work at the research and development division of ABC use some laboratory
specific applications unique to the pharmaceutical industry. At the moment they run those
software in Windows XP based computers.
Recently the company’s IT professionals decided to upgrade all computers in the
organisation from Windows XP to Windows 7. But later they found it is hard to implement that
upgrade in the research and development division because the software they are using for
research purposes do not compatible with Windows 7. But to maintain the technological
currency, vendor support and administrative purposes IT professionals are compelled to
upgrade laboratory computers to Windows 7.
The problem in brief: From IT professionals’ point of view, as a part of business strategy and IT
strategy of the organisation, all computer systems must be upgraded to Windows But from the
other hand, Windows 7 is not compatible with laboratory specific software used at the
research and development division.
The IT manager of ABC Pty Ltd suggests implementing desktop virtualisation as a solution for
this problem.
