Purpose of the task:
As a mathematics teacher, you will need to utilise, and perhaps select (or not) a relevant textbook for your mathematics classes. Like any teaching resource,
you need to be aware of its strengths, weaknesses and how this might impact your teaching. AITSL standard 2.1 states that you must demonstrate knowledge
and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area. This assignment covers the following
knowledge and skills: K3, S2, S3 and AITSL standard 2.1
Brief description of task.
Select a Mathematics textbook that suggests that it targets students in Year 7, 8, 9 or 10 and complete an analysis of the book.
Your analysis must include the following elements:
An academic essay about current research into the use of textbooks in the classroom. This essay must be referenced using APA and will include at least
6 references, three of which must be journal articles from the last 10 years. (500 – 700 words)
A discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of at least 4 aspects of the selected textbook, presented as a table. Aspects must include 4 of the
following 5 aspects: real world applications, problem solving, pedagogy, use of technology and assessment (300 – 400 words)
Provide a personal comment about the textbook, linked to the research (no more than one paragraph). Would you use the book and why?
