Second Attempt – Coursework (CAM)
Aims:
1. To develop comprehensive knowledge in application of concurrent engineering concepts using
integrated CAD/CAM/CAE software tools in modern design and manufacture.
2. To develop confidence and capability in the effective use of industrial standard CAD CAM CAE
systems.
Learning outcomes
1. Critically evaluate current CAD/CAM/CAE technologies and their application to enhance engineering
design and manufacture.
2. Employ and critically evaluate a range of CAM approaches and CNC simulations in order to plan
manufacturing processes, optimise manufacturing time/ cost, and produce NC data for efficient
production.
Submission:
Submit your files to Moodle Second attempt drop box before the date and time specified at the title page as
follows:
1. Zipp file – all Creo files from the CAM working directory zipped into a single file. (100Mb maximum size)
2. Report file (PDF or Word)
Notes: Check that the zipped file contains ALL necessary files. Before zipping the files, make sure that they
can be opened with PTC Creo without any problems. Submit the entire CAM folder and the Report file.
Late Submission:
Submission/ assessment – in accordance to Academic Regulations, University of Portsmouth, Academic
Registry
Tasks to be carried out:
1. Import the provided 3d part model to Creo and use it as reference part for the CAM model. Create a
square block as a workpiece having sufficient allowance to machine the top part of the model (no
need to machine the bottom and the sidewalls of the square base). (10 marks)
2. Create a process plan and set up a manufacturing process using a 3-axis CNC milling machine to
machine the part in mild steel. Select appropriate machining sequences including finishing of the top
surface and the 4 corner holes. Configure the relevant cutting tools for them. Create and observe the
tool path cutting simulation of each sequence. (50 marks)
3. Select/calculate appropriate cutting parameters and use the CADCAM system to estimate the
machining time for each sequence and operation. (20 marks)
4. Report – present all your work with relevant comments, screen captures, and discuss the main 3D
CAD CAM principles. (max 2000+-500 words). (20 marks)
Assessment:
Assessment grades for this course work will be based upon your Creo files/models and submitted report. To
qualify for each grade, the minimum expectation is listed.
50-60% Submission shows a reasonable understanding of the learning outcomes. A reasonably good CAM models and
simulations were developed demonstrating reasonable understanding of the main CADCAM applications. Brief
description of the required tasks illustrated with screen dumps and discussion on CADCAM systems advantages and
disadvantages have been presented in a report.
60-70% Submission shows a very good understanding of the learning outcomes. As above and also developing a
reiterative approach to improve the CAM and machining time optimisation.

70% + Submission shows a thorough understanding of the learning outcomes as applied to the problem area. A
thoroughly professional report demonstrating excellent CAM optimisations, including discussion on CADCAM systems
advantages/disadvantages and identifying the key features and functionality.
