SUPPORTING INDIVIDUALISED LIVING AND ALTERNATIVE
SERVICES
MoDUle AiM
The overall aim of this module is to equip course participants with the skills and knowledge
needed to design, deliver and progress the individualised service that is underpinned by best
practice and adherence to quality while influencing how services are delivered within the
wider non-profit/human services setting.
MiNiMUM iNteNDeD leArNiNg oUtcoMeS
On successful completion of this module the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate, contrast, criticise and judge the fundamental and
advanced theories, concepts and principles associated with individualised social care.
• Think critically, analyse, and solve problems in the development and management of
individualised social care.
• Manage, analyse and determine priorities for service provision in partnership with
service-users and their advocates.
• Identify the key external factors, including policy, standards and rights that underpin
individualised services.
• Reflect on the key skills that social care workers need to develop to be a key agent in
future individualised alternative services.

iNtroDUctioN
To live our lives as we choose we all rely on support, and in reality we are all interdependent
with each other regardless of how independent we perceive ourselves to be. The support we
need may come from family, friends, colleagues or the wider community. We also rely on
others with particular expertise which we do not have; such as depending on an engineer to
ensure that our homes are warm and well insulated. Other supports we need to live well are
built into the structures of society including pathways to education, health services and social
welfare support. People with disabilities have these same support needs, but may in addition
require individual supports to enable them exercise the same choices as everyone else. If this
individualised support is not available to them, if they do not have control over who, how,
where and when the support is provided, in effect they cannot exercise the same choices as
everyone else: their right to choice and self-determination is denied. Framed in this way, a
denial of individualised support can be seen as a denial of people’s human rights.
In this module the topic of individualised support is explored in depth.
Unit 1 examines the link between Individualised Service Design (ISD) and human rights, core
elements of ISD and its development in policy and practice in the UK. The issue of ensuring
quality in individualised services is also discussed. The evolution of ISD in policy, especially in
the UK, is not without its critics particularly in terms of the marketisation of social care and
the broader implications of this for the welfare state.
Individualisation is all about the person; their particular personality, needs, wishes, networks
and dreams.The individualised service (IS) is built on these unique aspects of the person and
is able to be responsive to the person as s/he changes and moves through life. Units 2 and 3
explore the details of how to design and establish an individualised service drawing on the
principles of Social Role Valorisation (SRV).These two units are developed from the work of
pioneers on the field including Simon Duffy, Hope Leet Dittmeier and Michael Kendrick.They
use a case study methodology to illustrate both the Discovery phase (Unit 2) and the
important steps in developing the service (Unit 3).

Unit 4 focuses on the factors supporting and hindering the development of IS in Ireland.The
external policy and funding environments are discussed along with an exploration of the
internal organisational capacity of existing disability service providers to embrace and
incorporate the change required by ISD.
