Assignment
Scenario
You have recently read some research about the misalignment of policies that have been developed to promote self
management of diabetes and the actual implementation in practice. You can see that the research suggests significant
improvements to service and provision as well as financial savings to the NHS. You are interested in exploring your area
of work in public health to see how successful the implementations of policies or proposed strategies have been on
practice, provision and financial cost.
Theme
The theme for use with Unit 18 is: Health, Safety and Safeguarding through the Lifespan
A key responsibility of the Healthcare Practitioner is to contribute to the health, safety and safeguarding of all service
users in their care. But what does this mean? In an ever-changing, increasingly complex health and social care
environment, our understanding of the role, duties and responsibilities of the practitioner in protecting service users
continues to evolve. One thing we are sure of is that evidence-based strategies to health, safety and safeguarding
contribute significantly to improving the health and wellbeing outcomes for service users, their families and

practitioners alike. The implications of ineffective, inefficient, poorly-researched or out-of-date approaches to
protection can be very serious – not only affecting the experience, health and wellbeing, and outcomes of service users
and their families, but also practitioners’ own wellbeing and safety, professional opportunities and career. To be
effective in their role, it is crucial that the healthcare practitioner actively recognises this and embeds a continuous
enquiry-based approach to their work in protecting service users; including respecting and upholding service users’
agency, views and rights in this regard. This is not only to be responsive to changes in legislation, policy and guidance
but also to take an active role in their own personal and professional growth and development, and to support the
continuous improvement of the services they provide. In the context of the health, safety and safeguarding of service
users and others, the healthcare practitioner should be rigorous and critical in their approach, be willing to challenge
and question themselves and others towards informing and improving practices in their work. This developmental
approach is most effective when underpinned by evidence and the healthcare practitioner should utilise the principles
and practice of research in their day-to-day practice in the protection of service users.
Students are to choose their own research topic for this unit. Strong research projects are those with clear, well focused
and defined objectives. A central skill in selecting a research objective is the ability to select a suitable and focused
research objective. One of the best ways to do this is to put it in the form of a question. Students should be encouraged
by tutors to discuss a variety of topics related to the theme to generate ideas for a good research objective.
The range of topics discussed could cover the following:
 Tackling neglect and abuse in health and social care settings.
 Independence and risk when providing healthcare in adult social care settings.
 Different approaches to safeguarding adults in an integrated care system.
 The impact of funding on being able to safeguard adults effectively.
Students are to submit as evidence for the unit in addition to their project findings, the research proposal and ethics
form. The research proposal sets out the plan for how the students will achieve the intended research objective(s) and
shows whether the objective(s) will be feasible, ethical and achievable in the time scale. It sets out how secondary
research supports the research objective(s), how the research will be conducted, how the research will be evaluated.
Students will need to gain ethical approval before commencing their research; this will be discussed with the tutor
during the research proposal.

Part 1
Consider the development of a methodical, ethical, reliable and valid research proposal as the foundation for the
project. The proposal should be agreed with your tutor prior to undertaking any research. Proposal and ethical forms
should also be agreed and completed. An ethics form must be submitted prior to completion of research as part of the
research proposal.
The project topic should reflect personal interest in a specialism and should allow for a sufficient degree of research
through the existence of adequate background materials.
The framework of your proposal should address a specific research problem or question. This can be stated as a
research question, objectives or hypothesis.
As guidance, a good project proposal and project title should have an existing body of literature or source material that
can be reviewed. In addition, it should extend the current line of learning, lending itself to further rigorous exploration.
You should decide on appropriate research methods and select an appropriate sample. Finally, provide a literature
review that identifies the background and conceptualisation of your proposed area of study. This would provide existing
knowledge and benchmarks by which your data can be judged.
Part 2
You should conduct your research as outlined in your proposal and keep track of your findings as you progress.
The research methodology and research process should be considered and clearly defined, demonstrating an
understanding of the pitfalls and limitations of the methods chosen and ethical issues that could be encountered.
Conduct your research, analyse your findings and draw conclusions. Research methods should be applied to evaluate
the data collected from primary research sources. Your research and analysis of your findings should be specific to your
original research question, from which conclusions can be drawn.
Reflect on the success of your research project and your performance at the end of the project with the inclusion of a
project evaluation and recommendations. In addition, based on the results of your study, what alternative research
methodologies would you use in future to improve the results?
Note: You should attach all the documents including copies of your chosen data collection tools (questionnaires,
interview schedules or journal/logbook) as a separate file in the appendix section of your assignment.
Presentation: Prepare a discussion and present the research study and findings to an audience. Your discussion should
present findings and relate these back to the literature you have found to assess whether it is similar, extends or offers
alternative findings. You should include references using the Harvard referencing system and present your data analysis
in an appropriate format.
A 10-minute individual PowerPoint presentation and 5 minutes allocated to questions. The presentation slides and
speaker notes should be submitted as one copy. You are required to make effective use of PowerPoint headings, bullet

points and subsections as appropriate. Students must attach their presentation as a (6 SLIDES PER PAGE) document to
their final assignment before submitting on the VLE (see appendix 2 for more information).
