Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module, learners will be able to:
Analyse the international business environment, focussing on contemporary issues.
Critically evaluate the role of governments and international institutions in influencing and regulating the international business environment.
Analyse the causes, effects and future of globalisation including Shareholder and Stakeholder Capitalism/Inequalities.
Critically appraise international economic and trade theories.
Analyse the cultural influences on international management.
Collaboratively produce effective management reports that address issues in international business.
Learning Activities:
This module engages with the real-time environment and in addition to examining theoretical materials and practical case studies, it will be necessary for students to be aware of key contemporary issues as they arise. Flexibility will therefore be key to succeeding in this module. This will mean flexibility in terms of content, delivery and learning. The teaching and learning strategy will focus on understanding, problem solving, and application of knowledge. The module encourages students to take a
holistic, social, environmental, critical and analytical look at issues arising in the management of international organisations. The overall objective is to introduce students to some major environmental issues that face today’s business in the International Environment.
A primary aim is to stimulate student inquiry and promote independent student learning. The learning tasks in the module are designed to encourage collaboration, problem solving and self-directed learning with a view to understanding and applying the key concepts of management within the flexible parameters of high-level business administration and within the international context.
Guest lectures and interactive workshops will be facilitated where appropriate, with relevant industry experts invited to present to the group to discuss key aspects of the module. In each case, the guest lecturer will choose a topic from the syllabus where they can give specific industry examples.
With the guidance of their lecturer, the learner will engage in, problem-based learning through the analysis of practical (real-world) scenarios, case studies: theoretical and practical.
Critical Success Factors
100% attendance is required and assumed. Failure to attend class correlates strongly with struggling on the module.
External reading / research is mandatory and assumed. You MUST obtain and use a Shibboleth account from the Library. NB class and Moodle materials are NOT sufficient.
You MUST attend Library sessions on Research [Shibboleth] and on Referencing. There are penalties for academic impropriety, which is often the result of not understanding the requirements.
DBS use the virtual learning environment (VLE) known as Moodle. This VLE is used as a blended delivery resource for learners. All class notes, resources, case studies and links to electronic resources are made available on Moodle. Other digital apps to facilitate creativity and problem solving, help nurture a lively interactive classroom environment or provide a mechanism for learners to evaluate can also be made available via the module page on the VLE.

Assessment for the module will consist of a group assignment and an end of semester exam. Each is weighted at 50%.

As International Management Consultants, the group is required to research, write and present a report on one of the following:
OPTION A: ESG [Ethics, Sustainability, Governance]
Critically assess the relatively recent emergence of this issue on the international stage.
The structure of your report should be as follows:
Identify the nature and scope of E, S and G, explaining the reasons they have now come to prominence. (40 marks).
Assess the implications for companies doing business internationally, citing examples of best and worst practice. (60 marks).
Total 100 marks
(For part 2 below your group will choose a country in consultation with the lecturer).
Analyse the current debate on Globalisation’s present status [ie strong/weak, strengthening/weakening] and its likely future development. NB you are looking worldwide here.
Assess the potential effects of a slowing down or reversal of Globalisation on the chosen country. (50 marks).

General Requirements for Students:
Guiding Principles for Assessment of Group Work and Individual Contribution:-
Where group members contribute actively and to the best of their ability to the production of the group report, they may expect equal grades.
Where anyone is shown to have been a “passenger” in a group, there will be a significant penalty. In an extreme case, where one member has contributed little or nothing, their grade will be close to zero.
It is up to the group to deal with the “passenger” issue should it arise – it is not acceptable to attempt to “delegate it upwards” to the lecturer.
Should a student for whatever reason, be unable to make a full contribution to the work of the group, they should inform the lecturer or the college immediately [this may involve recourse to the PMC process – Personal Mitigating Circumstances –].
It is NOT permissible under ANY circumstances for an individual student, or for two students jointly, or for more than five, to undertake this assignment without written permission from the lecturer.
Where a student has made diligent efforts to join a group but has been unsuccessful, they should immediately approach the lecturer, who will assign them to a group.
It is the responsibility of the group to make editorial improvements. Where a student honestly produces inputs to the best of their ability, they need not be penalised even if subsequent editorial activity is needed.
It is NEVER possible for any group member to receive a higher grade than the grade merited by the final report. This highlights the need for editorial activity.
NB: Assessment of Individual Contribution to Group Report
Your submission must include EITHER a note confirming equal contribution by group members OR evidence of a member[s] contributing nothing or very little. Grades may vary among group members. “Passengers” can be dealt with harshly.
There are penalties for late submissions, up to and including not accepting the assignment.
