GENERAL BACKGROUND: According to Ishak et.al (2012, Introduction section), “Energy drinks are a group of beverages used by consumers to provide an extra boost in energy, promote wakefulness, maintain alertness, and provide cognitive and mood enhancement.” – Redbull is the energy drink we are focusing on in our study, it has been found that Red Bull contains 80mg of Caffeine per 250 mL can – The study of Ferres 2010, highlights the role of caffeine as an adenosine antagonist within the brain. Caffeine has many arousing effects on the brain through its interaction with Al-A2A receptors within glutamatergic and dopaminergic terminals, overall influencing the motor arousal and activity of the body and bra , vAST STUDIES:
MATERIALS: • Scale > attentional ability scale • 30 x 250m1 can of Caffeinated energy drink (Red bull) 80mg of Caffeine • 75 different attentional activities Eg. Puzzle, memory game, word recall • Flyers/posters for advertisement

60 students from a primary school aged 9-12 will be sampled conveniently through the use of promotion. With the consent of their parents/guardian the 60 students will be randomly allocated into two groups. One group the control group, the other the experimental group. The experimental group will be given a 250mL can of Red Bull, containing 80mg of caffeine, 20 minutes prior to the experiment, and will be isolated from the control group. The control group will receive no treatment. Both the experimental and control group will be observed or individually undertake 75 different attentional activities The ability to perform the attentional activity will be recorded using the attentional ability scale. The scale will range from 1 being the lowest rating and not observed, to 3 being the highest rating and task is performed profficently A debrief will be conducted with participants and their guardians, following the collation of results and what that means for the attentional abilities of the pre-teen.
RATIONALE: JoeResearch focuses on sweetened beverages and energy drinks in general but have not necessarily focused on the effects of caffeinated energy drinks. Not many studies have been conducted for pre-teens and the positive impacts of caffeine consumption on alertness and cognitive performance
AIM: To determine whether caffeinated energy drinks affect the psychological attention span within pre-teens between the ages of 9 – 12 years of age.
HYPOTHESIS: Energy drinks containing high doses of caffeine are more likely to enhance simple cognitive performance for pre-teens (between the4 ages of 9-12) compared to pre-teens not consuming energy drinks of high caffeine.
