This tutorial describes how to create a basic facing operation.
Use the same process as in Tutorial 1
1. The same components as in Tutorial 1 is to be used for several machining operations but
saved as new Process each time. To do this:
• Open the Process file from Tutorial 1.
• Select File > Save Management > Save as (save the process file from the list).
• Save the file to a different folder with a unique name.
• Close the process file from Tutorial 1 and open the newly created Process file.
• Repeat this procedure for each tutorial.
It will be useful to hide the STOCK at this point.
2. Expand the Process List and single click on the Manufacturing Program.1 (Figure 1)
3. Select Insert > Machining Operation > Facing to open the dialogue box (Figure 2)

• In the Name text box enter Facing Top.
• In the Comment enter any meaningful description.
• In the Geometry tab click the top of the sensitive area to define the face to machine (Figure 3)

• Click on the top surface of the PART (Figure 4)

• The sensitive area has now turned green (Figure 5)

Verify that a cutter path has been created by selecting Tool Path Replay
in the bottom right hand corner of the box.
A cutter path should be displayed (Figure 6) although the tool and strategy are not correct.

Notice that the cutter path is currently bounded by the parts edges
whereas it should be bounded by the stock.
• Unhide the stock.
• In the sensitive area of the Facing dialogue box cursor to an edge, click the right mouse
button to select By Boundary of Faces (Figure 7)

Select the top face of the stock then OK in the Face Selection form. (Figure 8)

• Select Tool Path replay . Now the tool is limited by the stock dimensions.
4. Further parameters will depend on tooling and material used, common setting will be used.
• Click the Strategy tab .
Under machining tab set Tool path style to Back and forth as shown in Figure 9

• Click the Radial tab and use the settings shown in Figure 10

• Click the Axial tab and set the axial parameters as shown in Figure 11

• Click the Finishing tab and set the finishing parameters as shown in Figure 12

• Click the Tool Assembly tab and select Face Mill .
Then select More>> and change the tool parameters as shown in Figure 13

• Click the Feeds and Speeds tab and set the feeds and speeds as shown in Figure 14

• Click the Macro tab .
This function defines how the tool will approach the stock to start machining.
For Approach and Retract select Horizontal horizontal axial mode and change approach
distances to 30mm by double clicking the parameter (Figure 15)

• Activate Approach and Retract Macros by right clicking and then “Activate” (Figure 16)

• Click Tool Path Replay to visualize the operation.
• Click OK to add the Facing operation to the manufacturing program.
Save the Process file.
