This document forms the specification for your coursework in this module. This coursework will address and assess Learning Outcomes 1 to 4 as indicated below and in the Module Handbook:

You are required to write a report of no more than 3,000 words based on the assignment detailed in Section 3.
The report is weighted at 70% of the overall mark and assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 4.
You are required to create an academic poster with text support of no more than 1,000 words presenting the key aspects of the analysis and design of your solution detailed in your report.
er and associated presentation is weighted at 30% of the overall mark and assesses Learning Outcomes 1 and 3.
The report and poster will involve the analysis and design of a required enterprise system based on the case study described in Section 3.
Note that in addition to submitting your poster, you will need to present your poster and give a brief talk in a one-to-one session with your Tutor (via telepresence i.e. Skype, Teams) to explain the content and your findings, and both the submission of er and the talk form part of the assessment.
Together, the report and poster (including poster presentation) form 100% of the overall module mark and there is no other coursework that you are required to complete for this module.
The report should be structured in accordance with the sections outlined in Sections 3 and 4 (the Assignment Requirements and Case Study, and Assessment Scheme).
You must use Harvard referencing.
A plus or minus 10% variation on the word count will be accepted. This means that the absolute word count is 3,300 words for the report and 1,100 words for er. Do not exceed these limits.
This coursework should be completed and submitted as individual pieces of work. Neither the report or er are group work.
The case study:
The Big Engineering Company (TBEC) is a large, mature engineering firm that specialises in aero propulsion and industrial power including gas, electrical and nuclear power plants. A large proportion of the size and capacity of the business has been realised through the acquisition of competitors and new or specialist firms. These acquisitions have both extended the portfolio of products and opened new markets; for example, in the past, the purchase of the American Engine Manufacturers group (AEM) opened the US market to TBEC. This has led to a situation where TBEC now has facilities in 15 different countries and offers a high-quality aftersales service, covering mechanical overhauls and spare part distribution. Recent changes have seen the management hierarchy flattened and a strategic decision taken to be more responsive to customer requirements.
TBEC currently operates around 1,200 systems, many of which were developed over the last 20 years. These legacy systems are expensive to operate and difﬁcult to maintain and develop. They do not provide the accurate, consistent and accessible data required for good and timely decision-making and performance assessment (e.g. delivery performance, quality metrics). These aging systems also do not lend themselves fully to a modern manufacturing environment.
TBEC is structured along functional lines and various departments work in isolation. Their main manufacturing system, named WIZARD, is essentially a scheduling system that deals with resource management, logistics and inventory. The problem with this system is that it has difficulty communicating between sites and with an older inventory system named STORK.
This means that work that involves transfer of physical assets between sites are often difficult to track and sometimes cause inventory or stock-take inconsistencies. An additional system, Cost Accounting (CA), is used to ﬁnancially monitor transactions, which covered pipeline inventory and inter-site transport.
TBEC also has a range of individual systems for controlling and monitoring
commercial, ﬁnancial and procurement functions. These systems have problems interfacing with each other as they have different database structures, platforms and ﬁle formats. The legacy systems do not allow TBEC to effect direct, online communication with customers, partners and suppliers. Therefore, these systems do not support signiﬁcant growth of the business and are not sufﬁciently agile to keep pace with the changing business environment.
TBEC’s maturity and its pattern of growth through acquisition means that the various legacy and acquired systems and processes are operated throughout the company.
Many of the systems and processes operated within the facilities have developed from those operated prior to acquisition and thus the staff, especially the more experienced staff, have a thorough implicit understanding of them.
The processing of orders at TBEC, in particular the management of materials and production planning processes, are complex. The supply chain operates both externally with partners and internally between facilities. TBEC has a portfolio of products, takes custom orders and offers aftersales services, e.g. overhauls and spares. As order processing is an important part of the core manufacturing and servicing function, it has a direct impact on the profitability and reputation of the company. Therefore, ensuring that the system(s) that deal with this aspect of the business perform seamlessly is a key business goal of any system replacement/development project.
The management of the transferral of inventory within the company (between facilities) for servicing and assembly are particularly important to TBEC.
You must create a feasibility report (max. 3,000 words) for the implementation of SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for TBEC, to be delivered to management.
This report should consist of twosections:
A business case for the implementation of SAP ERP
Recommendations for the system/software development approach for the project
Details of critical success factors for the project
This should include consideration of the unique set of circumstances that occur at TBEC.
This section should include a critical review of the ERP’s ability to manage the product planning and execution processes, including the supply of parts for servicing and the assembly of products e.g. aero engines.
Issues that TBEC’s management are particularly interested in are the scalability, oversight and management of the process given they have facilities located around the world.
As you will not be implementing the ERP system, TBEC management has suggested illustrating the relevant functionality of the ERP using screenshots or designs from the Global Bike Inc. demonstration implementation provided by SAP.
This section should also include some consideration of implementation or operational problems that could impact the system.
To disseminate the findings of your report to a wider audience, you have also been asked to create a poster (containing a maximum of 1,000 words) that summarises the key points. You will also provide a brief talk in a one-to-one session (via telepresence
i.e. Skype, Teams) with your Tutor to explain the content of er and your findings. This poster will need to be presented, where it will be assessed.
In addition to the assessment criteria detailed in the next section (Section 4), it is important that both your report and poster clearly demonstrate the Learning Outcomes they aim to assess (see section 1).
The following sections aim to provide you with guidance when producing your report and poster. Only grades D (Distinction), M (Merit) and P (Pass) are pass grades.
A Distinction report and poster will excel in each of the requirements of Section 3 and provide a high degree of confidence in your understanding and ability in the area under investigation. The report will be structured in a coherent, ordered manner suitable for the topic under investigation. The style of academic writing will be excellent, with minimal or no spelling and grammatical errors and be written in a clear and concise manner. The introduction will provide an excellent context to the work, outlining key areas of focus or concern and the importance of the topic. Any methodology will be described along with associated rationale. The body of the report will demonstrate excellent critical insight and analysis into the domain under investigation, and the construction of this will demonstrate excellent synthesis of the contributing areas. Supporting literature will be both highly quality and current
e.g. journal papers, appropriately referenced, will underpin the work. The conclusion will summarize the key areas addressed in the project in a coherent manner, it will provide an overall concluding statement and position, supported by evidence drawn from the body of the report. The references will be in accurate Harvard format with no omissions or errors. er will provide a full and thorough coverage of the case study analysis with clear well-balanced text, visual and verbal evidence. Extremely professional presentation and timing.
A Merit report and poster will demonstrate a good level of engagement in each of the areas of Section 3 and provide a good degree of confidence in your understanding and ability in the area under investigation. The report will be structured in a coherent, ordered manner suitable for the topic under investigation.
The style of academic writing will be good, with some minor or no spelling and grammatical errors and be written in clear and concise manner. The introduction will provide a good context to the work, outlining key areas of focus or concern and the importance of the topic.
If appropriate, any methodology will be briefly described along with the associated rationale. The body of the report will demonstrate a good level of understanding into the domain under investigation, and the construction of this will demonstrate an overall understanding of the contributing areas. Supporting literature will be of good quality and recent e.g. books, conference papers, appropriately referenced, and it will underpin the work. The conclusion will summarize the key areas addressed in the project in coherent manner, it will provide an overall concluding statement and position, supported by evidence drawn from the body of the report. The references will be in accurate Harvard format with no omissions or errors. er will provide a good coverage of the case study analysis with clear text, visual and verbal evidence. Good professional presentation and good timing.
A Pass report will demonstrate a reasonable level of engagement in each of the areas in Section 3 and provide confidence in your understanding and ability in the area under investigation. The report will be structured in a coherent, ordered manner suitable for the topic under investigation – although some of that content and the associated sub-structuring will be lacking. The style of academic writing will be reasonable, though spelling and grammatical errors will be present. The introduction will provide an overview of the report. If appropriate, any methodology will be briefly described though the associated rationale will be lacking. The body of the report will demonstrate an acceptable level of understanding into the domain under investigation, though the construction of this will be weak in parts. Supporting literature will be of reasonable quality and dated, it will underpin most of the work. The conclusions will be brief and somewhat disjoint from the body of the report. The references will be in Harvard format with some omissions and errors. er will provide reasonable coverage of the case study analysis, however evidence may lack clarity and/or the combination of text, visual and verbal evidence may be unbalanced. Satisfactory professional presentation. Satisfactory timing.
