Task 1: Case Study
a. An introduction which explains the concept of safeguarding children and the vulnerable adults.
According to the study carried out by Peckover and Appleton (2019) children, and vulnerable adults are often exposed to neglect and abuse.  Therefore, it is essential that they must be[A2]  safeguarded from different forms of abuses and neglect. In this context, the study carried out by Crawford and L’Hoiry (2019) revealed that by safeguarding the children it becomes possible to protect them from maltreatment. In addition to this, it also helps in preventing the impairment of health of the children and ensuring that they are growing up in a protected society. On the other hand, safeguarding young people and vulnerable adult indicates that the rights of these people are protected.  According to the case scenario, as the mother of Sophie is suffering from depression therefore, she can be considered as one of the vulnerable adults and Sophie as a child who needs to be safeguarded as she is also facing the consequences of the mental health condition of her mother.
b. An explanation of the duties related to safeguarding of the professional involved in this
In this context, the work in proximity with the children so that they could be helped for building life skills, developing healthy relationships, and making the right decisions for themselves. In the present case study, Cherie has been playing the role of a youth worker who has heard about the way Sophie had been missing the classes to take care of her mother. In addition to this, Julie who[A3]  is the mother of Sophie has also been thinking of killing herself and consuming excess of alcohol. As a result of which Sophie had been facing issues in her studies and have also not been able to receive sufficient food thus affecting her development. As per Wyllie and Batley (2019), inappropriate environment has a significant impact on the development of a child both mentally and physically. Moreover, Sophie is also not willing to share the suffering with elders. Therefore, it is crucial that Cherie needs to approach to Sophie and create a friendly relationship so that she shares the incidence. In addition to this, it is also necessary for Sophie to work with social care workers so that proper treatment could be provided to Julie. This is necessary so that Julie could be supported to quit drinking and regain her confidence. This is also vital for the growth and development of Sophie. Additionally, both Sophie and Julie must be provided with counselling so that could be provided with better mental wellbeing.
c. The meaning of the term ‘significant harm’ in the context of safeguarding, outlining
which individual or individuals in this scenario are at risk of ‘significant harm’.
Significant harm in defined as the ill treatment or the impairment of the health or development of the child. In addition to this, seeing or hearing ill-treatment of another person is also a type of harm. As per the present scenario, Sophie is at the risk of significance harm. This is because the condition of the unfavourable condition faced by Sophie at her home due to the depressive condition of her mother. As a result of which, neither she is getting food is proper quantity nor can concentrate on her studies as she need to miss the school for taking care of her mother. Thus, it will affect her educational growth. Further, it will also affect the mental as well as physical wellbeing of Sophie.
On the other hand, Julie is also at significant risk. This is because despite her depressive condition she is not seeking any help and support. Moreover, she is spending all her savings in drinks rather than on food other essential items[A4] .
Task 2: Case Study
a. An introduction which focuses on the possible signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours that may cause concern in the context of safeguarding and how the example provided in the scenario may give cause for concern.
As per the study carried out by Kong (2020), signs and symptoms displayed by the children provide significant information about their physical and mental health. Therefore, from the perspective of[A5]  safeguarding, it is vital that these signs and symptoms must be observed carefully so that proper inferences could be made. In context to the case scenario of Sam, the cause of concern was the withdrawing behaviour of the child. Along with this, the other vital sign that is the cause of the concern is hitting other students during the play before withdrawing. Along with this, there was also prevalence of severe and fresh bruises on the right arm of Sam along with his neck. This is a clear indication that the child had been suffering from physical abuse. Thus, all the above-mentioned   sign and symptoms are the cause of concern.
b. A discussion of the ways in which an individual’s health, well-being and development can be damaged by an abusive situation and how this could relate to the scenario provided.
As per Jarman et al. (2018), child abuse along with neglect leads to several behavioural issues not only in the childhood but also throughout the adolescence. Along with this, such people also internalise behaviour such as being sad and withdrawn. This was also prominent in case of the Sam who displayed this behaviour. Along with this, the study conducted by Council (2017) stated that abusive situation leads to externalisation of the behaviours such as displaying aggressive and hyperactive behaviours. The author revealed that the persistence of this behaviour is the outcome[A6]  of sustained abuse. This was also observed in case of Sam who displayed aggressive behaviour towards his classmates.
c. An analysis of how national and local guidelines, policies, and procedures for safeguarding affect day to day work with children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.
Safeguarding has been one of the priorities of the national government of UK. In this regard, the different policies that have been formed included Equality Act 2010, The Children Act 1989, Children and families act 2014 and so on.  In context to the above-mentioned legislations, it is vital that the care worker must take priorities in context to provides safe environment to the children. In this context, it is vital that Adams will have the responsibility for ensuring that better environment could be established within the nursery so that the children could be protected (Star, 2019). In this context, it is vital that Adam and other people must pay attention on the behaviour of the children. Moreover, it is their responsibility to protect the children from maltreatment. Along with this, it is also essential for the managers to take actions regularly such that children can achieve[A7]  better outcome.
d. An explanation of what is meant by partnership working in the context of safeguarding.
As per Star (2019), cooperation between agencies is crucial to aid in reducing the risk of different cases from abuse and neglect. Moreover, partnership help to improved information sharing, joint decision making and coordinated action for assessing, managing and reducing risk. Thus, it is vital that education sector, health sector and social cares sector must come together to work in partnership. Thus, in context to Sam, it is vital that the teachers, parents, counsellors, healthcare practitioners must work together so that a better life could be rendered to the child.
From the above discussion, it is evident that children and vulnerable adults must be safeguarded so that a better life could be provided to them. Children who stay in abusive environment are more likely to develop psychological symptoms like withdrawing and so on[A8] .
