MODULE 4 INTRODUCTION
Agile Practices
Introduction:
In the previous module our focus was largely on ‘what’ the team does in
Agile. In this module, a large part of our focus will be on the ‘how’. How does
the team ensure that they are building to meet the customer’s needs? How
do they ensure that they have explored various options to Õnd the one that
they believe will best suit the customer’s needs? And how do they ensure
that the code they build meets the customer’s needs in the most elegant
way possible?
The above areas focus on the ‘how’ of building the product. There is also a
‘how’ of the process of doing the work upon which the second section of this

module will focus. Often the concepts of Agile is conÖated with nimbleness
and a responsiveness that eschews planning. But any Agilist ‘worth their salt’
will tell you that this is not true. Planning does take place and is tightly sprint
or iteration focused with a view to continuous improvement in each cycle.
While some of these activities may seem to be ‘fun’ they are deeply
meaningful in creating value through empathy with customers. Personas
require solid research to ensure that the capture to appropriate essence of
the customer and prototypes can help the team steadily and incrementally
build high quality products, but without wasting time and with the correct
allocation of eáort at the appropriate point of maturity in the design
process.
Concepts of velocity, burnup and burndown charts may at Õrst glance
appear technical and detailed. They are pragmatic tools in ensuring
sustainable delivery by focusing tightly on enabling the teams productive
progress. Note how this ties back to stories and story points as valuable
tools for estimation which in turn become ways of building a reliable rhythm
of delivery for the team, and from the team for the customer.
This Module will help you achieve the following
outcomes:
a) Undertake research to demonstrate an understanding of Agile
concepts, tools and techniques.
b) Discuss and demonstrate core concepts of agile methodology
within a context of a business case study.
c) Communicate the beneÕts of an agile PM plan in the context of a
business case to demonstrate a response to a complex business need
while aligning strategies to business priorities deÕned by changing
business requirements.
This Module will cover:
Module 4.1 – Personas, Prototyping, Test Driven Development
Module 4.2 – Burn Charts, Information Radiators, DeÕnition of Done,
Velocity

Time Management:
Your workload expectation is 20 hours for this module.
12 Week Delivery:
20 hours per module (two weeks): facilitated study: 3 hours / week.
Personal Study: 7 hours / week.
3 hours facilitated study consists of attending class, responding to
facilitator feedback.
You are to allocate 7 hours of personal learning. This includes
essential time spent on pre-reading and viewing materials,
assessment progression and learning activities.
6 Week Delivery:
20 hours per module: facilitated study: 6 hours / week. Personal
Study: 14 hours / week.
6 hours facilitated study consists of attending class, responding to
facilitator feedback.
You are to allocate 14 hours of personal learning. This includes
essential time spent on pre-reading and viewing materials,
assessment progression and learning activities.
Assessment Progression:
Assessment 2 is due at the end of Module 4.1. Tasks to undertake in this
module to prepare for Assessment 2 include all the reading or watching of
all essential resources, discussion forum posts, wiki building and
collaborative learning activities. You can prepare for this assessment by
utilising the learning resources of this module, which include readings,
videos, and learning activities to enhance your understanding of the key
concepts in this module.
Class Expectation:
You are expected to have worked through the essential learning
resources and activities for this module before attending the

facilitated session (face-to-face or online session) – this enables
informed discussion and full participation in learning activities.
Participate in all scheduled facilitated sessions.
This time is intended to be used by you and your learning
facilitator to work through activities and engage in discussion
about the module content.
These sessions provide a space for you to raise questions about
the module content and seek guidance on writing your
assessments.
You will review, explore and discuss more deeply the
information presented in the learning resources.
