Because Agile is intended to improve speed of delivery while building a
valuable product, much focus is placed on sustainable development and
constancy of pace. While ceremonies support this and ensure that delivery
of features Õts to the available time box, additional support can be gained
from Agile reporting on burn rate, velocity and information radiators which
help keep the team focused through transparency.
Burndown or burnup charts: are these the same, or do they have
diáerences?
As you saw in the last module, teams estimate work using story points as an
approximation of how much work will need to complete a story. Burndown
charts use this information to plan the work within a sprint using an ideal
trend. Actual work, using story points is then mapped against this trend to
determine how work is progressing or how the work is burning down.
Burnup charts show a similar perspective in that they reÖect the rate at
which work is being completed. However, they do have an extra component
for mapping scope, so that any changes to scope within in the sprint can be
considered. This chart allows you to understand if the team has more work
than they can deliver and what impact changing scope has had on their
delivery. This is tied to the Agile concept of Velocity or the rate at which the
team can complete work within their sprints. Note that Agile focuses on
delivering valuable, working software and is designed to support developers
by creating a team environment in which this is possible. Velocity allows the
scrum master to predict the amount of work that the team can complete
within a sprint, and this will inÖuence which stories will be moved from the
product backlog into the sprint backlog for completion in the sprint. Note
that velocity is not a target but a measure to guide planning. Information
radiators ensure that teams have vital information about how the team is
progressing. Transparency helps focus on eáort that helps the team to
achieve their goals.
