DO NOT USE THE STUDENT LAB WORKBOOK TO COMPLETE YOUR REPORT BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IT AND WHAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO DO HERE.

PURPOSE:

In this experiment you will examine a simple network using DC power supplies to illustrate the working of the mesh and nodal analysis methods in electrical circuits. The objectives are:

To revise the mesh analysis for electric circuits.

To revise the nodal analysis for electric circuits.

To calculate the currents and voltages for a given circuit.

To construct the same circuit.

To compare calculated and measured values for currents and voltages.

PRE-WORK:

PART 1: Nodal Analysis

Refer to the circuit in Figure 1 below. Use the nodal analysis to calculate Va and Vb.

Figure 1

Use Va and Vb to find the voltages V1, V2, V3, V4, V5 and currents I1, I2, I3, I4 and I5 in the circuit of Figure 1.

Tabulate the calculated results in Table 1a.

PART 2: Mesh Analysis

Refer to the circuit in Figure 2 below. Use mesh analysis to calculate ia, ib

Figure 2

Use ia and ib to find the voltages V1, V2, V3V4, V5 and currents I1, I2, I3, I4 and I5 in the circuit of Figure 2.

Tabulate the calculated results in Table 1b.

TASKS DURING THE PRACTICAL CLASS:

Access the simulation experiment in the link below:

https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/circuit-construction-kit-dc/latest/circuit-construction-kit-dc_en.html

See below diagram on how to navigate the simulation experiment.

Take note of the resistor values to be used in the simulation:

EXPERIMENT 1: NODAL ANALYSIS (Simulation)

In the simulation, connect the resistive network shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Tabulate your measured results in Table 2. Copy the calculated results (nodal analysis) from the pre-work in Table 1a.

Check if measurements are correct by adding currents at each node and discuss it.

EXPERIMENT 2: MESH ANALYSIS (Simulation)

In the simulation, connect the resistive network shown in Figure 2.
